Step by Step Guide to Easily Restoring Your RV Roof

Click on the Application Guideline to get full details on restoring your RV Roof.

Or see below for a quick overview of general steps.

  1. Determine Roof Material

The first step of using RV Rubber Roof sealant is to determine your roof’s material. Here is how to determine RV roof type:

    • EPDM - smooth & rubbery.  White top and black bottom.  Most common RV Roof material.
    • TPO - Textured & plasticky.  Same color top and bottom.
    • Metal/Aluminum - Looks like a metal roof.
    • Fiberglass - smooth hard gel like surface.
    • PVC/Vinyl - smooth & plasticky.  Same color top and bottom.

If you’re not sure of your RV Roof type, take some pictures and email them over to support@shopliquidrubber.com. We can walk you through the whole process.

  2. Inspect RV seams, joints and roof

    • Remove loose, flaking Lap Sealant.
    • Remove any Silicone Caulking (usually clear or opaque and rubbery).
    • Check for cracks or seams pulling back, coming loose.
    • Look for signs of cracking, peeling, or bubbling.
  3. Preparation & Cleaning

    • For TPO RV Roofs:
    1. Sand very well with 120 grit sandpaper
    • For PVC, Metal and Fiberglass RV Roofs:
    1. Roughen the surface with 120 grit sandpaper
    • Clean with Liquid Rubber RV Roof Cleaner for all roof types.
    • Use masking tape for areas not to be painted and remove with the Primer/Coating is still wet.
  4. Seal RV Roof Vents & Seams

    • Wipe around edges and seams with an Acetone soaked rage. Do not pour Acetone directly onto roof.
    • Use Liquid Rubber Lap Sealant around smaller vents and seams and Liquid Rubber Seam Tape for larger areas that need to be bridged.
    • Prime around the vents and edges with appropriate RV Roof Primer. Do not Prime over Lap Sealant or Seam Tape.
    1. Fiberglass, Metal, PVC/Vinyl - use Liquid Rubber Multi-Purpose Primer
    2. EPDM, TPO - use Liquid Rubber EPDM & TPO primer
    • When the Primer is dry (EPDM & TPO Primer is sticky when dry), apply a heavy coat of Liquid Rubber RV Roof Coating over the Primer, Lap Sealant and Seam Tape.  Leave some of the Primer exposed so you can lap onto it later.
  5. How to apply RV Roof Repair Sealant Coating

    • Wipe one side of the roof lengthwise with Acetone soaked rag and apply Primer. Allow 1-2 hours to dry (Primer remains sticky)
    • Apply RV Roof Coating in a heavy coat over the Primer leaving 4-6 inches of the Primer exposed.
    • Once RV Roof Coating is dry (6-8hrs) and you can work on it, wipe the other side of the roof with Acetone soaked rag and apply Primer.
    • Apply RV Roof Coating in a heavy coat over the Primer.
    • Once dry and you can work on it, apply additional coats in opposite directions until you use up your final recommended coverage.  ie. 5 gallons for a 30 ft RV
  6. Weather & When to Apply

    • Apply in dry, warm temperatures.
    • 10C/50F and above.
    • Below 80% humidity.
    • Avoid direct, hot, intense sun.
  7. Tips & Tricks

    • Use disposable gloves.
    • Use throw away brushes and rollers.
    • Do not let products freeze in their containers.
    • Use a tarp to lay out products and keep area clean.
    • Mix products well before using.
